I’ll be the first to tell you I am not a shining star of patience. When it comes to having patience with my kids or husband, there’s a lot of work to be done. In fact, I looked up the definition of impatience and it actually had my name next to it:
Impatient /ˌimˈpāSHəns/ noun:) having or showing a tendency to be quickly irritated or provoked. (also see: Jill)
Recently, I’ve felt challenged to become more like Christ in this area. One of my biggest struggles is recognizing when I am being impatient with my family in the moment. So, I’ve started asking God to give me eyes to see when I’m being impatient and the strength to change my attitude right then and there.
As I have processed what this means, I’ve realized I am only able to be patient with others through God’s Spirit inside of me. It’s a supernatural occurrence that flows from resting in God’s authority over everything—especially time.
While 1 Corinthians 13 is usually applied to human love, I cherish this verse because it points me to God. Rather than beating myself up, I can remember that God is love. Although He does not rejoice at my wrongdoing, He is patient with me when I am impatient toward everyone else. He won’t give up on me, so I don’t have to give up trying to be more like Him.
