“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.” Psalm 139:13-14
It was easy for me to read Psalm 139:13-14 and reflect in awe of God as I held my newborn son and daughter. I could sit for hours and declare they were “fearfully and wonderfully made.” The interesting part about these verses, though, is David, the author of this psalm, is talking directly to God about himself. He declares God knows him intimately and he praises God for His wonderful creation.
I struggle to declare these truths about myself. I am prone to think I am not good enough or beautiful enough. I focus more on my perceived deficiencies than God’s perfect design. God knows me inside and out because He created me. If God created me and God is holy, perfect and the very definition of love, then I can declare that I, too, am “fearfully and wonderfully made!”
Later in Psalm 139, David asks God to search him, to know his heart and to lead him. When it comes to God leading me moment by moment and trusting His way is best, it starts with remembering that God is my Creator. My first step in finding God’s direction for my life is trusting His design. The One who created me, the One who knows me intimately, is the One who will lead me most effectively.

To Consider this Week:
When you look at your children, in what ways do you see God’s handiwork? Think of three beautiful things about them and thank God for being a wonderful Creator.
When you look at yourself, in what ways do you also see God’s handiwork? Think of three beautiful things about you and thank God for being a wonderful Creator.
