Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2
One winter day I picked up the workbook for a Bible study I was attending. I opened up my grandmother’s well-worn Bible I received after she passed away. As I turned to the key passage (Romans 12:2), it was as if I could hear her speaking this passage — the voice of a mature woman with wisdom from years of seeking the Lord.
During that season of motherhood, I was battling stress and frustration. I felt like I could never “get it right”. I shouldered the pressure to be the perfect mom: having a clean house that could be featured on HGTV; making homemade favors for school parties; doing enough to be considered busy and successful while still having time to play with my kids and make dinner. As I read Romans 12:2, I realized these pressures were coming from the world’s standards of what a mom should be. The Lord showed me I needed to reevaluate my priorities and realign my thinking to what is good and pleasing to Him.
As I continued to think about my grandma, I remembered her main focus. She was concerned with the souls in front of her — loving, teaching, correcting, and supporting her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She reflected the will of God in motherhood: to help our kids become the men and women God calls them to be.
I can still get trapped in the world’s pressures. But I’m leaning into the Word of God more purposefully so I can discern His voice and walk in His calling for motherhood. There is freedom to just be the mom I am because I only answer to Him.
Press on, Mama!
More Moments in the Word:
If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. Colossians 3:1-2
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Colossians 3:16-17
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17
To Consider this Week:
