Last summer we had one of those weeks. You know the kind. It was an endless stream of unexpected challenges, seemingly designed by the enemy to beat us down. First, our A/C went out, then my youngest came down with a double ear infection. Overwhelmed, the kids and I loaded up in the van to seek solace at our friend’s pool. I pushed the ignition. Click, click, click…my battery was dead.
It was enough to make me want to throw my arms up in defeat. But as I unloaded the boys from the car, I turned around. There, in our yard, was a gushing fire hydrant the city had turned on to flush. With glee, my boys (already in their suits) ran down the driveway and splashed in the cool, endless stream of water.
As I saw the flowing hydrant, it reminded me of how Jesus said living water would flow from the hearts of His believers. The endless supply of life and refreshment the Holy Spirit offers is always available to us. Mama, we would be remiss if we didn’t pause under attack and drink from the Holy Spirit’s living water. The Spirit is always flowing through us, and we don’t need to settle for frustration or mediocre coping mechanisms when He promises us His constant refreshment.
As we learn this practice, the most vital thing we can do is model it for our children. They too, come under attack by the adversary. Let’s teach them how to take a cool drink of Living Water in the heat of the battle.
