When you read “keep in step with the Spirit,” what comes to mind? When I first read this verse, I thought it meant to live in harmony with the Holy Spirit—to live alongside each other, like roommates. But “keeping in step” actually refers to walking in line behind a leader. That changes how I view these words. It’s more like lining up in preschool and following the leader wherever they take you.
When I translate this to mom-life, I’m prone to think of myself as the leader. I want my kids to go where I tell them and behave exactly how I think they should. Of course, spending two minutes around a two-year-old quickly reveals this is wishful thinking. I’m a lot like my two-year-old when it comes to following the Holy Spirit. I get so wrapped up in what I want, that I fail to surrender to His leading. The funny thing is, while I have the responsibility to lead my kids as their mama, my main role is to lead them to God. Leading them to God requires that I “keep in step” behind Him.
Some of the ways I try to lead them to God is by praying before meals and thanking God for His provision. We also read Scripture before bed to remind ourselves that God’s Word is our ultimate guide. When the Holy Spirit leads us to meet someone’s need as a family—by dropping off a meal or praying for someone who is sick—I know it’s not simply an exercise in my obedience. It’s also an opportunity for the Lord to teach my kids how to keep in step with the Spirit.
