From the moment our babies are born, they depend on us to teach them how to live. We teach them how to eat and how to walk–I even remember a particularly funny morning when I taught my son how to blow his nose. There is so much they don’t know, and it is our duty (and joy) as mothers to teach them. 

Of course, some things are more easily taught than others. One area in which I felt particularly ill-equipped to lead my children was their faith. I barely knew how to pray–how was I supposed to teach my kids?

In moments like this, I am thankful for the Gospel accounts. In them we see the disciples asking Jesus to teach them how to pray. Now, Jewish men knew how to pray; God had given them special prayers which they were taught to recite at specific times for specific reasons. Yet, they wanted to know how Jesus prayed. As His followers, it was important to them to mimic Christ.

As modern-day mamas, the same can be true of us. Regardless of how comfortable we are with prayer, when it comes to teaching our children to pray, there’s no better place to start than by asking Jesus, “Lord, teach us to pray!” There are few requests He loves answering more.

Remember, as with anything, when we teach our children, we don’t have to be experts. Jesus is the real teacher and He will be there with you, guiding and leading you both along the way.
