I’ve always thought Sabbath was something I did for God. I’ve felt guilty about filling up my time with work and activities and not truly taking a “Sabbath rest.” When I read that the “Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath,” I was so confused!
As I’ve sought the answer to what this verse means, I’ve also done some soul searching. My enneagram type is “The Achiever” with a side of “The Helper.” I’m wired to do, to perform and to take care of people. My to-do list is never empty – I thrive in being on the go. And yet, Scripture tells me that I need Sabbath. Sabbath is a time of rest – where I am supposed to cease working!
I need to remember that God is always working and always taking care of people. He is the ultimate achiever and is THE helper. For me, turning off “work mode” is an act of TRUSTING that God is who I believe Him to be. Taking a nap, playing with my kids, or enjoying a Sunday afternoon bike ride is hard for me. But I am learning to see this as a time where I am actively trusting God. Where do you need to practice Sabbath by resting in God? I’m convinced that as we follow God’s design for Sabbath, we’ll see why He created it for us.
