When my husband and I get into a tiff, no matter how big or small, it’s easy to forget we are on the same team. Geoffrey told me during one of these moments that, “I’m on your side.” It was a great way to turn the burner down on a heated discussion. In marriage counseling, we learned to write our issue down on a piece of paper. Then, we place the issue on one side of the table, while we sit together on the opposite side. It’s a physical reminder that it’s the two of us against the issue, and not me against him.
Our instinct in conflict or struggle is to believe we’re alone. At times, I’ve found it difficult to relate to God through loss, disappointment, discouragement, and periods of what feels like endless waiting. Is God on my side? Is God good? But God always gently reminds me, “I’m on your side.” The Message version of Nahum 1:7 describes God as a “hiding place in tough times.” Difficulty often makes me wonder if God is conspiring with the enemy against me, but the truth is that God is the one carving out a space to protect me.
God revealed His character through Nahum. He is always on the side of His people through suffering. Whatever you’re facing, take a step toward God today by reading a Psalm, sharing your struggles with a friend, or saying a prayer of thankfulness for all that is good in your life. God is a hiding place in tough times and always invites you to take refuge in Him.
