As I rocked my newborn son, I softly sang his name and stroked his cheek. “Luuuucas…I love you, sweet boy.” His dark, round eyes searched my face, content but unseeing.
It struck me that while he was captivated by my voice, he didn’t understand my words. He felt comforted by my presence, yet he didn’t know my name. He couldn’t fathom my hopes for him or grasp why sometimes I held him close, and other times, I laid him down.
Holding him, I realized, That’s how we are with You, isn’t it God?”
Like our children, as we grow and spend time with God, we come to know His Name, character, heart, and will for us. I have walked with God for over twenty years now. While I know more about Him than when I first began, there is still so much I don’t know and never will.
As much as we may long to understand everything God does, the truth is, His ways and thoughts are higher than ours. And isn’t that a really good thing? Would He truly be God if we could fully understand Him?
As I grow in my faith, I am coming to terms with the wonder and joy of our unfathomable God. I thank Him for the ways He has revealed Himself to me. I am grateful that He desires to be known. But I also thank Him for His mystery, judgments, and plans—because even if I cannot understand them, I know they are good. Trusting this, I can rest in His arms, as content as a newborn child.
