I recently returned to work full-time after staying home with my babies for 8 years. There were so many emotions going into this new chapter–excitement, nervousness, and everything in between. As the transition loomed, one thing that weighed on me the most was the balance of work and home. How would I maintain order and peace in our house while so much of my time would be focused outside our four walls?
Enter marriage. I have been so thankful for the husband God gave me. I have seen the beautiful dance God created in marriage through serving and helping, giving and taking. There have been many days since starting my job where my husband has seen my workload piling up and quietly made school lunches or unloaded the dishwasher. It has been an act of God’s love. And you know what, Mama? It inspires me to respond in mutual service. On the days when my husband comes home exhausted and poured out, I see my opportunity to serve him in return. It makes me think of Romans 12:10 and Paul’s call for us to “outdo one another in showing honor.” It’s almost becoming like a game to see who can serve each other more.
We live in a culture of constant competition, but what if we put a positive spin on that and compete with each other to show honor and service? What if, in our homes and our workplaces or even the line at the grocery store, we tried to see how we could best serve others in God’s love? What if our children saw us outdoing one another in sacrificial love? When God’s people truly live that way, the effect will be contagious.
