But in the silence, we can strengthen our faith, trust in His goodness, and examine our hearts. Because more than anything, it is our hearts He is after.”Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; you shall cry, and he will say, ‘Here I am’” Isaiah 58:9a
My daughter’s favorite game is Hide and Seek. As a toddler, she would cover her eyes and “disappear” as I looked under chairs, playfully calling her name. As a preschooler, she learned to hide, but her stifled giggles would give her away. Now six-years-old, she has learned the art of hiding, and seeking her out has become a true challenge.
I love playing Hide and Seek with my daughter…but not so much with the Lord.
I have experienced many seasons when it felt the Lord was hiding. During those times, I would beg Him to answer my prayers, hearing nothing in return. He felt distant and cold. I wondered if He cared.
If you’re in that place today, Mama, let me assure you, He cares very much. In his silence, He is working. In His hiding, He is inviting you to seek.
In Isaiah 58, the Lord is pleading with the nation of Israel. They had fallen into a dangerous pattern: seeking His favor but not His fellowship. Eager for them to turn their whole hearts towards Him, the Lord fell silent.
While His silence is not always an indication of sin, it is an invitation to assess. If there is any part of us that is not trusting, any hint of pride, His silence makes a space for us to deal with it.
Isaiah 58:9 promises us His silence will not last forever. In His timing, He will respond to our cries and quiet us with His presence. But in the silence, we can strengthen our faith, trust in His goodness, and examine our hearts. Because more than anything, it is our hearts He is after.
Press on, Mama,
More Moments in the Word:
Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:13
With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments! Psalm 119:10
God did this so they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any of us. Acts 17:27
To Consider this Week:
If you’re in a season of silence:
What emotions are stirring in you right now? Share them with God. He is listening and He can handle them.
What might the Lord want to accomplish in and through you during this time?
How can you commit to seeking Him with your whole heart right now?
This is a time to trust God’s word over your emotions. Remember: He is with you even if you cannot feel Him. He is working even if You cannot see Him. He is singing over you even if You cannot hear him.
