The smell of sour milk overwhelmed my senses the moment I opened my daughter’s bedroom door. As I neared her crib, I could see she had been sick; the mess was everywhere. A wave of panic rolled over me followed immediately by a wave of compassion. I quickly set into action, reaching into the crib and drawing my daughter out, placing her feverish body against my chest. My presence calmed her and I felt her relax as we rocked. Soon she was in clean pajamas, her bed stripped and cleaned, and my own soiled clothes replaced with fresh ones. 

It was heartbreaking to see my sweet girl sick for the first time. It was terrifying to feel helpless against her stomach bug. Yet through the memory of that night, I can clearly see the beautiful way in which the Lord comes to us in the middle of our own mess. 

And I am certainly a mess, right now. Between a future I cannot predict, uncertainty I cannot see past, and headlines I cannot fully comprehend, my prayers these days sound a lot like a child crying out for her father. Thankfully, He is a Father who is mighty to save! 

He is Jehovah Rapha, “The Lord Who Heals”, and He is never out of control. Whether we come before Him with a feverish child or a fretting heart, He is faithful to draw us close. His presence reassures us. His love quiets us. And when we are faced with a battle we cannot wage, our Father fights for us.
