“Buddy!” I breathed, exasperated. “I need you to move a little faster than a snail!!” My son is notorious for taking his time. He loves nothing more than ambling up the walkway or slowly sssllliiidddinng out of the car.
As a younger mom, this used to infuriate me. Driven by our culture’s demand for productivity and hustle, I moved through my days at a breakneck pace, dragging my children behind me. Those early days were filled with exhaustion, frustration, and lots of meltdowns (theirs and mine).
All of that changed, however, when I read Isaiah 40:11. Through the beautiful imagery of a shepherd caring for His sheep, I came to see that Jesus moves through this world at an altogether different pace. Jesus, it seems, is never in a hurry.
What I love about today’s verse is the peace Jesus extends to “those that are with young”. He understands the challenges and demands of this season. He doesn’t drive us forward with oppressive expectations. Instead, He walks alongside us, leading us gently, carrying us and our children close to His heart.
Isaiah 40:11 reveals what life can be like when we stop chasing the things of this world and choose, instead, to walk beside Jesus. It’s a choice to live with open hands, willing to accomplish what He asks and leave the rest undone.
This simple practice of surrender has set my family free, and it can do the same thing for yours. As His beloved, we are not beholden to the demands of this world. We are free to walk beside Jesus, to live at the pace of His peace.
