Hey, ETX friends!!! Come join us at the Harbor Women's Conference in Longview, TX this February! We have attended Harbor since 2019; it is our favorite event of the year!
This year, they are bringing in speaker and author, Lisa Whittle (it's going to be SO GOOD!!!) and the amazing Davy Flowers for worship!!

Fast-forward 19 months. We adopted our foster daug

Fast-forward 19 months. We adopted our foster daughter and three months later we fostered her baby brother (and adopted him 17 months later). Although the caseworker was right about our daughter being placed for adoption, she was wrong about bio mom’s character. Today, she has completely transformed her life. We have gotten to know her and have formed a relationship with her. We have learned that she is kind and generous. She is loyal and brave. She is strong and strong-willed (and now we know where our adoptive daughter gets it – ha ha!).
I learned so many things from our relationship with our kids’ bio mom. First, I have learned that bio parents are not the villains and we, the foster parents, are not the heroes. It would be easy if life were that simple—that black and white. But it never is. Bio parents have their own fears when their children are placed into foster care—handed over to strangers. Foster parents need to partner with the bio parents to ease their fears and reassure them that we are offering their children the best care we can provide.
Second, I’ve learned that bio parents are not one-dimensional figures. They are real people just like me and you who have their own stories, their own struggles, and their own pain. Have they made mistakes? Sure. But so have we. That’s why we all need a Savior. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Rom 3:23).
Finally, I have learned that no one is beyond God’s redemption. No foster child. No bio parent. No foster parent. Not me. And not you. God came to save all of us, and no one is beyond His reach. Scripture tells us that Jesus “wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.” (1 Tim 2:4).

When we adopted our daughter, we chose the following verse for her: “Watch closely: I am preparing something new; it’s happening now, even as I speak, and you’re about to see it. I am preparing a way through the desert; Waters will flow where there had been none” (Isaiah 43:19, The VOICE).
We prayed God would break the cycle of poverty, sin, and dysfunction through our daughter. The miracle is that He went above and beyond our prayer and is breaking that cycle through her bio mom as well. God is always in the business of re-writing narratives and for that we are forever grateful.

Like most foster/adoptive moms, I will never forge

Like most foster/adoptive moms, I will never forget the day our daughter came into our lives. I’ll never forget the placement phone call I received or how she showed up, literally, on our doorstep. I’ll never forget my older daughter stepping off the school bus, walking in the house, seeing a tiny baby girl sitting in her car seat and squealing, “I see pink!”
I will also never forget the caseworker and the calloused way she referred to our (then) foster daughter’s biological mom. Her bio mom had recently lost custody of two older children, and they had been adopted out. Now, this tiny, quiet baby had only been in the system for a few hours and the caseworker was already convinced she would be placed for adoption too. The caseworker immediately painted an unfavorable picture of the bio mom that stuck with me for years.
During our fostering journey, I quickly learned this was the normal mindset among many in the fostering community: foster parents are the heroes; bio parents are the villains. I now know, however, that this narrative needs to be re-written. Everyone has a story. Everyone has a history. Everyone has been dealt a hand, yet not everyone’s hand is equal. Over time I learned a lot about bio mom’s story, and it gave me great empathy for her.
If there is one piece of advice I’d give to foster and adoptive moms it’s this: No one is beyond redemption. God can redeem and restore anyone. He did it for you. He did it for me. And he did it for our daughter’s bio mom. No one, no matter how far gone they appear on paper or in real life, is beyond God’s grasp.
