Days after my daughter was born, I settled into bed, hoping to get some sleep. Just as I began drifting off, however, I was jolted awake by a baby’s cry. I shot up and peered over my daughter’s bassinet. She was fast asleep, gently sucking her paci. As I laid back down, I heard it again. A baby was definitely crying…and it was coming from our den.

I threw back the covers and stormed down the hall. As the baby’s cries reached a crescendo, so did my anxiety. When I reached the den, I saw my husband stretched out on the couch, watching two fictional teens care for an abandoned infant on our TV.

Tears burned in my eyes as I shouted at my unsuspecting husband, “You need to turn that down or turn it off!! There is a baby crying that I can’t nurse and it’s driving me insane!!” 

My daughter was not even a week old and yet, motherhood had changed me. No longer could I hear a baby’s cry without feeling a guttural, instinctual need to act on its behalf.

Mama, this is a picture of compassion. When the Bible tells us Jesus has compassion on us, it’s describing His guttural, instinctual need to draw near and care for you, His child.

If you are hurting, if you need help, cry out to Jesus! As surely as a mother moves to draw her baby close, Jesus will move to draw you close, as well. He couldn’t resist the urge if He wanted to. It’s who He is: a loving and compassionate God.
