As a little girl, I loved watching my mom get dressed for a fancy night out. I would sit on her bathroom counter, chatting away as she applied her makeup, chose her jewelry, and slipped on her dress. As a finishing touch, she would always spritz on her favorite perfume. 

Once dressed, she would walk around the house, gathering her things and greeting the babysitter before kissing me goodnight for the evening. I missed her so much once she left, but I took comfort in the lingering scent of her perfume, found in every room she had walked through.

The final lines of Psalm 23 always bring my mom’s perfume to mind. At the start of this familiar Psalm, David boldly declares, “The Lord is my Shepherd, I have all that I need!” He then spends the next five verses describing a life of intimate care and overflowing blessing that comes with following the Lord. 

I can’t help but marvel at David’s faith. Surely a life lived that close to Jesus would make a lasting impact. Surely it would leave behind a legacy of the goodness and love of Christ. 

When we live like David, fully confident in our Shepherd’s care and provision, our lives become like a fragrant perfume. No matter where we go or how long we stay, we are sure to leave behind the beautiful scent of Jesus.
